Oil pastel, pen and black ink, gold marker ink, and white ink on dark gray paper

Laced with visible indications of movement, Nigel Coates’s Ski Station captures the dynamism of skiing through fast, colorful strokes of oil pastel over the ink drawing. The lively gold script with words such as talk, watch, rush, and ski activates the lower quadrant of the drawing, conveying the intensity of the sport. As these golden words eclipse the solidity of the drawing’s structural lines, they also evoke Coates’s interest in contemporary culture, referencing popular magazines, fashion icons, and punk music.
