The Victims project comprises 67 structures located on the grounds of the former Gestapo headquarters in Berlin. The structures were to be built one at a time over a period of 60 years. Like many of Hejduk’s other projects, Victims is not only a proposal for a memorial but also a visual and textual narrative about social relationships, both real and imaginary. Unfolding like a series of characters and plots in a play, Hejduk’s Victims reconnects Berlin with its traumatic historical memory, laden with human emotion, heroism, and tragedy.
